Katniss Everdeen is a teenager living in District Twelve, a particularly poor region of a dystopian society called Panem. Every year, the Capitol holds a contest called the Hunger Games, in which two teenagers from each district are put together in an arena where they must fight to the death. When Katniss’s beloved younger sister Prim is randomly selected as one of the tributes from District Twelve, Katniss volunteers to take her place. Katniss is a skilled hunter and has valuable survival skills, but does she have what it takes to beat trained fighters from other districts? Will she have to kill Peeta, the other tribute from District Twelve, who has a crush on her? And what can she do to show the Capitol that they don’t own her?
