Summary:
In post-apoctalyptic Chicago, all sixteen-year-olds take an aptitude test that determines which of the five factions best fits their personality. They then can either transfer or remain in their family’s faction. Beatrice’s choice is more complicated than most. She is divergent, which means that her results don’t conclusively place her in any one faction. She chooses to join Dauntless. As she goes through the rigourous and highly competitive initiation, Beatrice—now known as Tris—comes to realize that the animosity between the factions is more dangerous than she had previously thought.
